November Update

Hello and thank you for taking time to read the latest web page update from the Mytchett and Deepcut Beat Police Team.

BURGLARIES
Historically during the winter months the number of burglaries committed increase these are the top ten tips to reduce the risk of being burgled.

Most burglaries are opportunistic so here are a few simple steps you can take to discourage a burglar from targeting your home:

Lock doors and windows.
A third of burglars get in through a back window. Lock your doors and windows even when in the house particularly in an unoccupied room or if you are out in the garden. Make sure doors and frames are strong and in good condition.

Check gates and fences.
An open gate or broken fence can be a temptation to potential thieves. Keep your side gate shut and locked. A burglar usually has more cover when trying to break into the rear of a property.

Keep desirable items from view.
Valuables should not be easily visible or accessible to passers by. Keep items including car keys, mobile phones, handbags and wallets out of sight and never leave car keys near an open window or door.

Switch on the lights.
Don't advertise your absence, even when you're away on holiday. You can use time switches to turn on lights, radios and other appliances. Some exterior lights have an infra red sensor that reacts to movement.

Install a burglar alarm.
Visible alarms make burglars think twice. There are a number of sophisticated alarm systems ranging in price. Consult your insurance company about which would suit your needs.

Consider a door entry.
If you live in a flat the most vulnerable part is likely to be the front door. Fit hinge bolts to stop the door being pulled off its hinges and consider having a door telephone entry system installed.

Don't hide a spare key outside.
It’s vital to have a spare set of keys but you should never keep the spares in a convenient hiding place such as under the door mat or in a flowerpot. These are the first places a thief will look. Give them to a trusted neighbour or family member.

Look out for each other.
Consider joining or supporting a NHW group. Ask a neighbour to keep an eye on your home if you are going away and ask them to move your post away from the front door and take in your bin. Cancel all deliveries such as milk and newspapers.

Stay alert to suspicious behaviour.
If you do see anything suspicious report it to police immediately.

Forming a NHW group in your road is a good way of beating the burglar as a community. For more information ring 0845 125 2222 and ask for the Crime Reduction Advisor for your borough.

FIREWORKS

Again we hope that you all enjoy the 5th of November and I just want to give a quick reminder about the law covering the use of fireworks. Apart from organised displays it is an offence to set of fireworks past 11.00pm in the evening.

It is also an offence to supply any person under the age of 18 with fireworks.

It is an offence to throw fireworks in the street at any time.

I would encourage persons to attend one of the many well run fire work displays being held in the local area such as Ravenscote School.

HALLOWEEN UPDATE

During the evening of Friday 31st October Halloween, the local Neighbourhood team for Surrey Heath had 24 Police Officers and 10 Police Community Support Officers on patrol in the borough. These officers worked throughout the evening specifically to deal with any reports of anti social behaviour.

I am pleased to report that the evening passed with out any major incidents. In Deepcut there were no reports made to Surrey Police of any disturbances throughout the evening. In Mytchett there was one vehicle damaged by so called trick or treaters, and one male was arrested by me for attempting to steal eggs from a local shop.

Regards
Stuart and Babs

October Update

Halloween

The evening of the 31st of October, ‘Halloween’, is historically the busiest night of the year for the Police.

The majority of persons enter into the spirit of the evening however a mindless few will take the opportunity to be a general nuisance and cause criminal damage. This will not be tolerated and Surrey Police are lying on extra patrols to combat this. The Neighbourhood Team will be out en-mass proactively patrolling your area in an effort to allow the vast majority of you to enjoy the evening’s festivities.

I would ask all residents to report any anti social behaviour to Surrey Police on 0845 125 2222. Please be patient as the volume of calls is anticipated to be extremely high. I would also ask that parents be aware of what their children are doing and pay particular attention to your egg and flour stocks. Surrey Police will be speaking to local shops keepers asking them to be extra vigilant and not to sell flour or eggs to young people.

For those of you who don’t want to be disturbed by trick or treaters, we have a supply of notices to display in windows. If you would like one of these free notices please contact us.

Bonfire Night

Just as Halloween finishes we have another busy night in the form of Bonfire Night. I would like to remind residents of the law’s governing fireworks.

•It is an offence to let fireworks off during night hours (11pm to 7am), except on Bonfire Night (midnight), Diwali, New Year, and Chinese New Year (1am).

•It is also an offence to supply any person under the age of 18 with fireworks.

•It is an offence to let off fireworks in the street at any time. Anyone found guilty is liable to pay a fine of up to £5,000 and can be imprisoned for up to 6 months. Penalty notices for disorder (on-the-spot fines) can also be issued for this offence, attracting the upper tier fine of £80.

Thank you
